Five Christmas Gift Ideas for Your Father-in-Law

| November 29, 2012

Gift cards as Christmas presentFinding a Christmas gift for your father-in-law can be tricky. It should not only please him but also your mother-in-law. You don’t want to give him a box of his favorite cigars if she has been nagging him to quit, for example. Consider these five Christmas gift ideas to please everyone in the family, then use DexKnows listings to play Santa.

1. Golf or Other Activity Gift Card

If your father-in-law plays golf, get him a gift card to his favorite course or perhaps to one he has always wanted to play. Perhaps he would enjoy a golf lesson. For the non-golfer, pick up a certificate for another favorite activity, such as time at the batting cage, gun range, fitness center or even the spa, if he enjoys pampering himself on occasion.

2. Tickets to an Event

Take a look at the upcoming concert and performing arts schedule. Your father-in-law’s favorite band might be coming to town, or he might appreciate tickets to the local theatrical company’s next production. NASCAR tickets also might be a good fit if you have a track in town and he likes to see the races. If none of these ideas for Christmas gifts would involve your mother-in-law voluntarily, make it clear that you or your spouse will be his escort for the event.

3. Cool E-Reader

Is there an e-reader he wants but hasn’t wanted to splurge on himself? The new Amazon Kindle Paperwhite or Nook Simple Touch make an excellent gift, if he enjoys reading, while the iPad mini might top his Christmas wish list. Whichever item you have in mind, tell him you have it on your holiday shopping 2012 list for your spouse to see if he comments. It may be a sneaky way to gauge his interest, but it works!

4. High-Tech Gadget

Stores such as Sharper Image and Brookstone offer a variety of high-tech gadgets for the father-in-law in your life. A talking BBQ thermometer would please a griller, or if he prides himself on keeping watch over the neighborhood, a pair of night vision binoculars would do the trick. Get him a GPS system if he and your mother-in-law like to hit the road.

5. Weekend Getaway

If you want to combine both your father-in-law and mother-in-law on your Christmas shopping list, give them a weekend getaway. Make sure it pleases them both, though. For example, if he loves to hit the links but she doesn’t, find a resort that offers both golfing and an activity she enjoys. Many golf resorts have an on-site spa, as well as tennis, horseback riding and other outings your mother-in-law might enjoy.

If you don’t think any of the above will help you cross your father-in-law off your Christmas shopping 2012 list, simply ask him what he wants. He might just surprise you with suggestions. Once you have a Christmas gift idea to run with, DexKnows listings will help you find what you need.
