Spring break has become a rite of passage, a time to adventure with friends. While places like Cancun and Panama City top the list of hot spring break destinations, not everyone wants a week of partying. An increasing number of students are seeking a meaningful spring break alternative through volunteering.

Check out these ideas for alternative spring breaks or create your own. Don’t forget DexKnows is your destination to help make travel arrangements and prepare.

Travel abroad to serve

Many organizations are sponsoring programs through which students can volunteer. Among them is the United Way, which directed 58 students from 30 colleges to south Mississippi to help tutor elementary students, rebuild homes damaged by Hurricane Katrina and create nature trails.

The United Way’s alternative spring break program is again sending students to south Mississippi as well as Tuscon, Ariz.; El Paso, Texas; and Newark, N.J.

Another alternative spring break option is the American Hiking Society, which encourages participants to build and maintain trails throughout the country.

Want to travel the world while serving? United Planet helps organize trips to places like Peru, Ecuador, Costa Rica and more. United Planet offers a fundraising guide to help you find ways to raise the money to cover the costs.

DexKnows can help put you in touch with a travel agency to get you where you need to be.

Volunteer at home

You don’t necessarily have to travel to find an alternative spring break idea. You can always find opportunities closer to home.

The website DoSomething.org offers this list of alternative spring break ideas:

  • Clean local beaches.
  • Plant a garden.
  • Rebuild a home.
  • Volunteer at a soup kitchen.
  • Donate.
  • Lend a hand at an animal shelter.
  • Run a collection drive.

There are other opportunities throughout your neighborhood. Check with your church or agencies like Habitat for Humanity, which builds homes for low-income families. You can spend a weekend or even a week helping to build the home and come back later to see a family rejoice when it comes time to take possession.

Can’t find an opportunity you like? Create your own. Find a need and organize others to help.

Plenty of alternative spring break ideas exist for people who are looking to give back. You can still experience an adventure without heading to the beach or spending a week partying. Decide on your alternative spring break, and let DexKnows help hook you up with travel agencies, stores where you can buy clothing and equipment, and other needs as you prepare.
